Special Stars, Special People

It is not uncommon for people to blame the stars in their natal chart for whatever defect of character they might possess. This idea is largely due to the modern revival of astrology, greatly inspired by some of the tangents of C.G. Jung. Jung was occupied with astrology, as he was with alchemy and Gnosticism, he saw astrology as the summation of the psychological knowledge of antiquity – and thus he held a firm traditional base at heart. Jung was a pioneer and as all pioneers he went through a rapid succession of changes, ending with his Gnostic revelry known as ‘Seven Sermons of the Dead’ and his ‘The Red Book’. Up to this time his thinking was riddled with attempts and broken and reconstructed hypothesizes. He wanted to reintroduce traditional Platonic ideas into science and particularly psychology. Sadly it is not his conclusions he is remembered for, rather some stepping stones towards his summation. This is not uncommon; the same fate befell his teacher, Freud, who is basically remembered for Oedipus and a general sexual obsession with man’s psychopathology.

Jung got at times lost in symbols and his thoughts about the archetypical world. Plato, the student of Pythagoras, saw the archetypes as confined to the realm of divine and pure ideas, immutable. It was these ideas that got bastardized and treated as changeable that was thrown into ‘the chambers of the unconscious’ where the soul spoke through dreams and memories. It was here things went into an odd direction, where we find archetypes defined as ‘foxes’, ‘tricksters’ ‘wise old men’ and so forth. The immutable ideas have been subject to a fall and imprisoned in the human and finite psyche of man. Now, personally, I don’t believe this was Jung’s intention, after all he also said repeatedly that we need to analyze the movements of heaven to understand our own character and actions – what came to be understood as our own mythology.

So, what we find is a distinct inward turn, where the archetypal world of ideas is turned into a psycho cosmos belonging to someone in particular and here every mundane repeating trait risk the definition of an archetype. Modern dictionaries do define archetype as an original model – and the term is subject for an evaporation of cosmic meaning and truth quite proper for how modern astrology works. Ah, and not to forget, for Plato the archetypes represented ideas - and ideas were all potencies of irrevocable truth - divine principles that caused and sustained creation and all things created.

With the advent of modern psychoanalysis and astrology we also gained a distorted focus on the microcosm. Since man was a cosmic world in its own right – it was sufficient to look at man and in man find the starry patterns that matched this astro-psychological microcosm. All of a sudden the stars spoke solely about YOU – a discipline in classical and traditional astrology is known as natal astrology, and is certainly just a part of this sacred science. Traditional natal astrology defines what is dignified and debilitated in your chart and several predictions can be made in reference to your natal chart. Also, all practical matters, such as relationships of any form, wealth, death, fame, sickness and so forth can be predicted. Your nature is basically a component relegated to the first and tenth house with planets in dignity and your ascendant contributing to give colour to how the constitution of your soul might be.

With Jungian astrology the whole zodiac became a map of the soul and also there came an excessive interest for slow moving planets like Uranus, Neptune and Pluto to be like a hidden company of zodiac rulers. Traditional astrologers are often given a rap not to pay attention to these planets – but we do pay attention to them – but only if they are in significant aspects.  In my own case Neptune is in a platic trine with my natal Moon – so I do give it some value, but in general we are speaking of the spirit of the world and not the individual with these three outer planets. When we start to add trans- to these planets and have trans-Pluto and trans-Neptune running around, well, the plot can only thicken as the intrigue grows greater!
Now, I must also add that I do understand the use of these terms in the sense of trying to define a particular current, hell, H.P. Lovecraft was clearly trans-Pluto and trans-Uranus in how he received his trans-Neptunian dream teratomas and other monsters of imagination and origin.

Then we have all the asteroids and satellites that are also given value, like Pallas, Vesta, Chiron, Dionysus and so forth. Somehow the replicate the Arabic parts, that Al Biruni developed a map of the soul, but they were in turn rooted in mathematical relationships between stars -  and thus the allegory falls dead – or does it? We have today, two such mathematical points, namely Lilith and Dionysus. Lilith being the black moon (earth) and Dionysus being the black sun (earth), they are both mathematical points of friction given names from pagan pantheons. So, we find a succession of Al Biruni – but without the connection to source he held – and further the assignment and understanding is based upon modern tenants where the microcosmic man is treated as he or she is dislocated from the macrocosmic ideal.

Modern astrology opens for introducing special stars so one can feel more special… because after all, it is about unlocking what is a captive in your unconscious. Unconscious, what a nonsense word – if it is forbidden for conscious, how the hell can you even think about it – even less bring what you don’t know into vitality? If it is you that keep something you don’t know imprisoned in your psyche, why would you ever bother with releasing it – after all you don’t know it is there.

Today when people do this or that and you questioned it you can hear people telling you from time to time that they were a victim for the prisoner in their unconscious min or that they could not do anything else, because of their natal chart. Ah, blaming others or blaming the world – what a wonderful tragedy of self seduction!

But, sure, it is there; archetypes are nowadays just a blue print, a ‘primordial model’ open for interpretation – and your natal chart is the map of your soul. Any astrologers rooted in tradition will look at you with a curled smile and tell you, ‘whatever’…

But here it goes; modern astrology holds a fantastic power, the power of generating the illusion that makes the ordinary seem extraordinary. It can be a natal chart that is kind of dry and uneventful in its basic structure that is used as an excuse for failures. It can be a natal chart filled up with Neptune and Pluto making semi trines and half oppositions with Pallas, Eros, Lilith and Vesta that brings out someone quite interesting, intriguing and dangerous.  Take your pick, illusion of self or what Fate gave you…

Whenever I see these rambles, excuses and explanations, I see time being wasted, because we are all unique – for good or for bad. Some of us fall prey to the masses; others force a track for themselves. A man ruled by mars, who is embraced by Jupiter will be fierce and just as a woman embraced by Saturn and ruled by Mercury will be a solution the problems of anyone. This is the traditional nerve in astrology.

Astrology is not about finding out how ‘special’ you are – it is about finding out what the stars holds for you, so you can make your fate and complete yourself.  Modern astrology tends to exalt whatever is good in you and give people a false sense of self esteem. In our day and age, people needs this, it is all so easy to drown in the ocean of flesh and opinion – falling victim for the norms and morals of modern society as they lure you with pleasures and distractions.

I think, it is when you cease searching for being special, you will truly be special – a unique manifestation of a congregation of stars and planets guarded by a host of daimons that push and pull, so you can move towards your Fate.

Every man’s Fate is the same, it is about joy, happiness and fulfillment, but the ways Fate moves are unique – and so it happens that one man’s venom is another man’s food, one man’s lucky star might be your disgrace…

To Turn a Battle into Dance

Provocations is something we all experiences, it be by accident or it being deliberate. A thoughtless word spoken in the wrong moment or the rash action we give to the world on a bad day can invite conflict. Sometimes people provoke some sort of reaction because they feel bad about themselves or they suffer from envy. At other times it is to measure strength or they seek to win an argument so they can feel better about themselves or the philosophy they took as a compass in their life. There is no limit to what can provoke us and therefore, instead of entering the negative energy of a provocation it is better to take a step back and see what we can do with the provocation. For Oscar Wilde the answer to a provocation was to repay it with kindness, because nothing would provoke more than this.

Ifá places at the center of fortune iwa rere – a joyous, calm and happy character. If this is what we seek to maintain any provocation will be solely a dance and not a battle. In the odu Ogùndábàrà we find a story about Obara, a youthful fiery power often associated with a young and immature Sango (the spirit of thunder and fire) that challenged Ogun. Ogun is the patriarch of the hunters, a primordial power that gave birth to roads, blacksmiths and was instrumental in the creation of mankind. We might say that Ogun is the forge itself, whilst Obara represents fire alone – a younger product of the forge. In this story Obara apparently provokes Ogun to such extent that he is determined to kill Obara, but instead he makes ebo/sacrifice. In this case, his sacrifice was a change of attitude where he realized that he could entertain Obara’s challenge, but as a dance and not a battle. The verse says the following:

Rìtìrìtì ni ojú ijó
Rìtìrìtì ni ojú ìja
A dífá fún Ògún
Nlo ba Òbàrà já ìjà kan
Wòn nì Ògún á dáa
Sùgbón ki Ògún wá sebo
Kí Òbàrà má baà kú síi lórùn
Ó gbó ó Ru
Wón ní adie kìí ba adìe já ki ó kú
Agbòn ìràwé kìí wúwo
Kí ó d’éru pa’ni

In Karengas translation:

Tumultuous is the place of dancing
Tumultuous is the place of battle
This was the teaching of Ifa for Ogun
When he was going to engage Obara in battle
They said that Ogun would do well
But that Ogun should practice sacrifice
So that Obara might not be killed in
The struggle
He heard and sacrificed
They said that a bird should not fight
Another bird to the death
And a basket of dry leaves is not heavy enough,
That its contents should kill someone

This is a good attitude to hold when confronted with provocations in general, because if we see the battle as a dance where we ‘hit’ our provocateur with ‘dry leaves’ we might teach a lesson – and gain a lesson, but we should also keep in mind that dance amongst the Yoruba people are seen as cosmic movements. Dance can enact the movements of stars, it can bring disorganized life back into harmony and it can be used as divination or as a vehicle for diagnosis of illness. Ultimately, dance holds the power of healing and a healing dance is performed by people who possess iwa rere – a joyous and calm character. It was with this attitude Ogun entertained Obara’s challenge, knowing that he was older, wiser and stronger – still, we are all together in the dance of life, in this market that is our journey. Ogun understood this and embraced the challenge with interest and joy and not as a battle. This is certainly an attitude more worthy when confronted with provocation – in fact this attitude have a Socratic spin to it and in this aims towards widening of horizons of understanding more that proving a point or defining who is right and who is wrong. The battle turns into a dance of word and opinions mutually stimulating and rewarding – and in this the cosmic dance of joy and harmony is replicated.  Ase O!

The Fetish of Inquisition

15th of July this year a mob of neo-Pentecostals invaded a terreiro of Candomblé in Olinda, Pernambuco, Brazil screaming for casting out Satan and threatening to kill the people in the terreiro if their evil ways where continued. This is not a unique incident – but one of the more grave ones so far as the aftermath revealed, torture, persecution and violence. These Pentecostal formations seem to be the more fresh branch on the tree of Inquisition and intolerance, continuing a putrid legacy of self righteous wardens of ‘divine law’.

This is perhaps not such a great mystery given the obsessive occupation these neo-Pentecostals have for Satan, it is like the God of Love has been relegated completely to the shadows of neglect and turned into a cruel protector of wrath and intolerance. Love thy neighbor has fallen out from the commandments and is replaced with ‘slay the infidels’ – and in a world like ours, we all are standing with a foot and an arm in Hell.

Seeing the nature of charismatic Jesus worship in these small churches claiming apostolic succession – while having none – is quite baffling. In their ceremonies angels and spirits of divine judgment are called upon in darkness to take possession of the adherents – just so they can be filled with the spirit of vengeance and bloodshed. They do perform acts of sorcery, but instead of resorting to demons they use angels – or simply Jesus Christ for these purposes. Their theology is not a faith of the mind – but a faith of passionate experience where the reception of Christ in the heart is the law itself. In other words, there is just the law of what you feel is right that reigns with no mediation by reasoning or contemplation. The heart is the throne for the realm of the soul and passions – and naturally they get occupied with Satan, because after all he is the Lord of passions and all what is pleasurable and sexual. It is here at the throne of Satan the fire of passions fetters their kinky souls as they condemn in the name of an intolerant and angry idea of God. As any hypocrite they are farting words of love while their soul is veiled in the oils of wormwood, well baked in lustful sulfur. This fire they are brooding and cuddling, understanding to be a form of Christ love, is nothing else but a host of malefic parasites from some sordid spirit realm that moves them into politics, to proselyte castrated theologies and guilt venerating morals.

The moralistic wrath they impose on God is in truth a fetish – a kink – but contrary to the personal exercise of our kinks and fetishes these brutes clad in suites made red with the blood of lamb and goat twist the kink into a religion that should be embraced by all.  As the blood runs and trickles and enflame their putrid soul they are getting it off by condemning all those who do not have received Jesus in their heart – and mind you – this reception must be according to their rules and in conformity with their witless idolatry of wrathful spirits of harm.

Certainly there must be a rush and a tickling in the groin by seeing yourself as the moral guardian of this sinful world. Sin is the stuff dreams are made of; sin is dabbling with the forbidden. It is a transgression re-enacted in the way a fetish or a kink might be harnessed and exercised as we cross over and take our chance on the poisoned apple, or fig.

We know from the time of the Inquisition that God and sex walks hand in hand but we also know as Michael Gira shouted in ‘Children of God’ that ‘the sex in your soul will damn you to Hell’. It should also be well established that sexuality suppressed demands new – and often more wicked – forms of manifestation. Sexual inclinations established do not simply go away, they just mask themselves.

Genuine Witchcraft is Explained

Genuine Witchcraft is Explained by John of Monmouth is an important book, particularly in the power of being a historical document and a celebration of legacy. It is truly an important publication that allows the reader a travel in time that allows us to witness the dynamics in a working group of the mysteries.

As a historical document it is also volatile for the discrepancy that lies at root of history as a discipline; notably that history is largely qualified guesswork upon facts occurring across a horizontal axis of events. History has never intended to be anything more than this. All historians will have a point of departure that serves as their focus, the red thread as it were. For John of Monmouth the focus is Ron White and his legacy – as such the book is a tribute to this man and the impact he held on the revival of paganism and witchcraft – and it is perhaps here the book can be experienced as a bit diffuse as it sets out to explain witchcraft, but is in reality paganism explained.

Now, this might sound like hair splitting semantics, but I do hold, as Robert Cochrane did that ‘a witch might be a pagan, but a pagan is not necessarily a witch’ – there is a distinction here and it is my informed opinion that the ‘witchcraft’ was something Robert Cochrane kept away from the Thames Valley Coven as it was a matter for his other group, The People of Goda or the Clan of Tubal Cain. The distinction between clan and coven is in all available communication we have from Cochrane kept apart.

And it is here written in the documents and letters included as appendices, that The Clan of Tubal Cain existed before Robert Cochrane’s death. Certainly after he met Evan John Jones, things shifted significantly.  Others including Norman Gills and William Gray served as energetic and inspirational additions to The Clan of Tubal Cain – hence Cochrane and his Clan became from 1963 more salient as a disparate entity from the coven. So, basically, the Royal Windsor Coven that was established as an inner circle after Cochrane’s death held no bearing on Cochrane’s legacy and transmission in the form of The Clan of Tubal Cain.

It is known that Roy Bowers stated several times, prior to the foundation of Thames Valley Coven that he already possessed initiation by virtue of at least three sources in Westmoreland and Long Compton. A subjective perspective makes John of Monmouth discard Roy’s claims (but those of us who have been subject for the transmission of blood knows that such matters are not written in ink – but with starry quills on parchments of blood)– even though these various lineages informed his smaller group of the nameless art that he referred to as The Clan of Tubal Cain, The People of Goda.

The book also holds personal value for me as it speaks of the involvement of one of my spiritual ancestors, Robert Cochrane and his involvement in the Thames Valley Coven that later gave birth to The Regency. But it should be noted that for John of Monmouth, Cochrane is not the focus of his interest, not important per se, except only as a part of his legacy - just as he stated when he was interviewed at ‘Witchtalk’ He also said in the mentioned interview that he is more occupied with the paganism of man.
